The new ‘Take Control’ rider training courses will offer riders of any type of machine - from a first scooter to a large sports bike - the opportunity to improve their skills, confidence and temperament for no or very low cost. Although the scheme offers five different courses to suit specific needs, every bike rider would benefit; as Stephen Rumble from Warwickshire Road Safety Partnership explains; “ We are working with very experienced advanced instructors who are able to follow a training format of defensive road riding, whilst also tailoring a practical on-road session to suit each motorcyclists level of experience and the type of riding that they do. Three of the courses are free and the other two cost only £30 for a full day of instruction. Similar courses can cost between £100 and £200, so this represents great value for money and is certainly one of the best subsidised schemes in the country “. The scheme was developed following a detailed research programme that considered Warwickshire motorcyclist’s behaviour, attitudes and motivations. As motorcyclists make up less than 2% of road traffic, but more than 22% of all fatalities and serious injuries on the roads, the scheme forms a crucial part of a plan to meet government targets for significant casualty reductions. In total, 650 free and subsidised training courses will be available this year to motorcyclists who ride in, live, work or study in the counties of Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Shropshire. Stephen Rumble continues;- “ Starting with a brief and a hot drink at a favourite cafe close to home and then spending a day on the bike would be most motorcyclists’ idea of a great day out. The courses are intended to be enjoyable as well as informative and we are hoping all manner of motorcyclists will take up this offer during the better biking months. Anyone playing sports such as rugby, football or golf will know that the only way to really improve their game is through training and the same principles apply here; although the Take Control experience could just save your life someday “. Take Control courses can be booked at any time to suit the rider, by calling 90-ONE Rider Education on (0845) 370 91 91 or eMailing info@90-ONE.com For more information, go to www.warwickshire.gov.uk/takecontrol Notes:
In 2008, 81 motorcyclists were killed or seriously injured (10 fatalities) in Warwickshire. Two wheeled powered vehicles make up approximately 1% of all road traffic and yet in Warwickshire, nearly 23% of all fatal and serious injury casualties involved in road traffic collisions are motorcyclists and scooterists. This is slightly higher than the national statistical average. Take Control aims to reduce motorcyclist casualties by enhancing rider ability, confidence and attitude through the delivery of subsidised, targeted and accessible practical motorcycle training. Riders of mopeds, 125cc bikes and more powerful machines would all benefit as the instructional format is always tailored to the level of skill and training needs of the individual rider. Take Control is organised by Warwickshire Road Safety Partnership and Safer Roads Partnership for West Mercia and produced with the support of the Department for Transport. The MCIA (Motor Cycle Industry Association) supports the training programme. Article source: Warwickshire County Council
