Motorcycle Museums of the United KingdomA new book, Motorcycle Museums of the United Kingdom, has just been released. It provides a look at museums in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland that have at least one motorcycle on display.

Particular emphasis has been given to major British motorcycle museums:
• National Motorcycle Museum. Located outside of Birmingham in the West Midlands, this museum is the largest motorcycle museum in the world.
• London Motorcycle Museum. It’s located in the London suburb of Greenford, and specializes in Triumphs, but does have other makes.
• Sammy Miller Museum. Sammy Miller is perhaps the greatest trials rider of all times. His museum is located in rural New Milton, and features motorcycles from all over the world. It’s not unusual to meet Sammy as he walks around the museum.
• Black Country Museum. Located in a Birmingham suburb, Black Country is a living history museum which replicates a 1930s coal mining village. It has a small but superb collection of motorcycles made in the West Midlands from approximately 1910 to 1930.
• Brooklands Museum. This museum is geared more to automobiles and the Concorde, but it does have a collection of restored motorcycles and a race track that’s been used for more than 100 years.

Motorcycle Museums of the United Kingdom contains 88 pages of museums that are dedicated entirely to motorcycles or maybe have only one or two, such as the National Bicycle Museum. Early motorcycles were simply bicycles with engines. The book contains descriptions of museum holdings, open hours, directions on how to get there and what facilities, such as cafes, are available. Since some of the museums are located off the beaten path, the author includes ideas for other tourist attractions in the area.

Motorcycle Museums of the United Kingdom was written by Cheryl Probst, an award-winning photojournalist who has worked for newspapers in Oregon, Washington, Alaska, New York and China. Probst is the author of several mni-guides on traveling in China, including Parents Guide to Beijing: a kid-friendly city and DIY Beijing: a guide for the independent traveler.
