For the third consecutive year, in honour of the ‘great and the good’ of motor racing, Motor Sport magazine held their annual and exclusive Hall of Fame awards ceremony at the Roundhouse in Camden, London (Thursday 16 February). A host of famous names from the motor sport world turned out to celebrate the achievements of this year’s four illustrious inductees who are John Surtees OBE, Adrian Newey OBE, the late Colin McRae MBE and one of the most successful riders of all time, Giacomo Agostini.

Motor Sport magazine has established the Hall of Fame, held in association with TAG Heuer, as a firm favourite on the social calendar within the industry. Personalities such as Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Jackie Stewart, Christian Horner, Martin Brundle and Steve Parrish were in attendance at the Roundhouse. Celebrities at the event also included Manish Pandey the writer of the BAFTA award winning Senna movie, BBC Saturday Kitchen's James Martin, Nick Mason from Pink Floyd, TV presenter Nick Knowles, ex-England Rugby Captain Lewis Moody MBE, and TV presenter and 2012 Dancing on Ice contestant Andy Akinwolere.

First on stage were Jimmy McRae and Nicky Grist accepting the award on behalf of Colin McRae – the 1995 World Rally Champion, which was presented by fellow scot Sir Jackie Stewart, and David Richards CBE. Martin Brundle and Steve Parrish then presented to Italian motorcycle legend Giacomo Agostini who has fifteen World Championships to his name.

Sir Stirling Moss and Rob Diver, from TAG Heuer, opened the second half of the awards ceremony presenting to John Surtees – the only man to have ever won World Championships on two and four wheels. Finishing the award winning line-up of inductees was Adrian Newey, the only designer to have ever won Constructors Championships with three different Formula One teams. Red Bull Racing’s Christian Horner and Motor Sport’s Editor-in-Chief Nigel Roebuck were on hand to bestow the honour.

In aid of the Henry Surtees Foundation at this year’s awards, guests at the Hall of Fame were invited to give generously as part of a raffle on the night. For more information about the Henry Surtees Foundation, go to www.henrysurteesfoundation.com.

Quotes:

Jimmy McRae
“We’re very honoured. I don’t think Colin realised what a popular guy he was. To be inaugurated into the Motor Sport Hall of Fame is special because it’s mainly a racing community, so to be the first rally driver to win it is quite fantastic. As a family we are so honoured this has happened, everyone loved the Colin McRae style of driving and it’s shown by the following he has.”

Giacomo Agostini
“It’s wonderful for me to receive this award from Motor Sport. I will put this one with all my trophies. It will be my 2000th! This one is very important to me.”

John Surtees
“Well it’s a new experience for me here, I’ve been to the Hall of Fame in America, but it’s nice to come along and join some of these luminaries in motor sport. Of course it’s a wonderful occasion tonight, celebrating the in-depth interest for motor sport itself.”

Adrian Newey
“This is something I had never dreamt of, to have joined so many legends, so many people who I have followed, who I have aspired to when I was younger. It’s an amazing feeling, it feels very special.”
