Panther Story by Barry M Jones |
|
For anybody who does not know, Panther motorcycles are one of the great names in British motorcycle history. They were manufactured between 1900 and 1967 in Cleckheaton, Yorkshire and are probably best known for their big (600cc) sloping single cylinder machines that powered many a sidecar outfit. This work by Barry M Jones was once described as the most complete and comprehensive marquee history ever written, no surprise given the above. However, that is not meant in any way to criticise an exceptional detailed and meticulous work, merely to compliment the diligence and research in compiling it. However, despite such dedication, inevitably there are always small errors so this second edition, now reprinted as soft-bound book, includes improved illustrations, some revisions and a few corrections to the text. There is also some additional material mainly concerned with recollections of people formerly connected with P&M. So if you have the first edition you really need this and if you have not got it, you really need to add it to your bookshelf if you are a student of the British motorcycle industry. Having said that when you read through the 330 pages you also get a tour through the social history of Britain as the manufacturer progresses through the various changes that were taking place in deign an and manufacturing! Given all the angles covered and as an example of a comprehensive work, it is well worth the £30.00 cover price especially as the original is now out of print!
