A History of Road Racing by Duke MarketingIf you are one of those people that believe that racing should remain on the roads where it all originated, instead of fast, safe featureless tracks, you will love this latest release from Duke Marketing. A trawl through their extensive archives has produced an hour and half programme which traces the fascinating, turbulent, history of road racing.

It is not intended to be a comprehensive or exhaustive history, but you would have to be a real anorak to come up with things they may have missed. Evocative period archive footage and interviews are used to recall the circuits, machines and riders who have played key roles in the development of road racing over the past 100 years.

When talking road you immediately think Isle of Man and the TT which as we all know is well over a 100 years old, or maybe some of the Irish circuits, but as this presentation shows there were of course many other road courses around the world. The famous Italian Monza circuit is of course just one that is featured, however, as this presentation points our own Donington Park was more road than track in the 1920s and 1930s.

In 1949 of the championship now known as MotoGP was formed using mainly dedicated racing facilities on old airfields, such as Silverstone and purpose built circuits around the world. During what many still regard as the golden era of motorcycle racing in the 1950s and 1960s, genuine road circuits still remained a central part of the World Championship.

Eventually though as more rider’s got killed or hurt, the safety lobby forced many of these to be abandoned and even the TT looked to be heading for the history books as top riders started to boycott it and it lost its World Championship status.

A History of Road Racing features interviews with legendary racers including Giacomo Agostini, John Surtees, Geoff Duke and Stanley Woods, as well as Murray Walker, a lifelong TT fan.
In addition the DVD includes six on-board laps letting you experience some of today’s famous road racing circuits including the Isle of Man Mountain Course, Dundrod and the street circuit of Macau, not mention all the other great footage contained in this excellent presentation.

Road race fans will just love this, but even MotoGP fans should watch it to see how the current sport appeared as road racing forged the way and created the fast safe tracks we have today. Some say road racing is for real riders, but this is a DVD for all race fans and well worth the £19.99 asking price.
